On July 1st 2026, Sony announced that starting in January 2028, new titles will be digital only, no more physical discs will be made
I speculate this will annoy gamers and fans across the board, and I am also speculating if this an end of an era where material objects start going fully digital. I wonder if we are entering the digital century, and if material objects like the Disc will become obsolete.
I’m speculating Sony will have a knock-on effect where people may switch to Xbox and Pc gaming, but how long have we got before the rest follow suit? It’s the sad end of an era of the Disc. Will now-discs become valuable collector’s items like retro gaming is now?
An online petition has been set up to counter Sony’s decision and reverse it, with a staggering 150,000 and climbing within a few days. Will Sony listen to its fan base, or am I speculating that this is a deeper rabbit hole going on here?
